Biocrystallisation is the formation of Crystals from organic macromolecules by Living organisms. This may be a stress response, a normal part of Metabolisms such as processes that dispose of waste compounds, or a Pathology. Template mediated Crystallisation is qualitatively different from in vitro Crystallisation.
The main purpose of Crystallisation in an organic chemistry procedure is to purify the desired compound. Crystallisation also may be used to isolate a solid organic compound from a mixture of compounds in a step in the work-up of a reaction mixture.
