But here is a fun fact that will ruin your day: that keyboard layout was designed in the 1870s. Not to make you type faster. To make you type slower. Yes, really. The QWERTY layout is a 150-year-old bug that nobody bothered to fix. And here is the story of why.
The Typewriter Problem
In 1873, Christopher Latham Sholes sold his typewriter design to Remington — yes, the same company that later made rifles and shavers. The early typewriters had a problem: if you typed too fast, the metal arms that struck the paper would jam together. Think of it like two people trying to walk through the same door at the same time. Chaos. Jam. Angry typing sounds.
Sholes’ solution was clever but backwards. Instead of making the machine better, he made the human slower. He arranged the letters so that commonly used letter pairs — like “th” and “er” — were placed far apart on the keyboard. This separated the metal arms and reduced jams. It also made typing physically slower and more awkward. The machine won. Your fingers lost.
The QWERTY layout was literally designed to be inefficient. And here we are, 150 years later, still using it. On devices that have zero metal arms. Zero jams. Zero mechanical reason to be slow. The original problem vanished decades ago. The “solution” stayed.
The Better Keyboard That Nobody Wanted

Because by 1936, QWERTY was already locked in. Millions of people had learned it. Thousands of businesses owned QWERTY typewriters. Typing schools taught QWERTY. The cost of switching — retraining every typist, replacing every machine, rewriting every textbook — was astronomically higher than the cost of just living with an imperfect keyboard. Other Keyboards You Have Never Heard Of
QWERTY and Dvorak are not the only games in town. There is AZERTY, used in France and Belgium, which is basically QWERTY with a French accent. It costs about RM2,500. Your IT department will not approve it. Your colleagues will think you are building a bomb at your desk. But the people who use Maltron keyboards love them with a passion usually reserved for sports teams and religious figures.
Why You Will Never Switch (and That is Fine)
Let me be honest with you — and with myself. I am writing this article on a QWERTY keyboard. I will probably die using a QWERTY keyboard. My children will probably use QWERTY keyboards. The QWERTY layout has outlived the typewriter, the desktop PC, and possibly will outlive the physical keyboard itself as we move toward voice, gesture, and neural interfaces.
